The Renaissance Period is the most important period in the History of English literature। ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের ইতিহাসে রেনেসাঁর ভূমিকা খুব বেশি পরিলক্ষিত হয় চসারের মৃত্যুর কিছুকাল পর থেকে। একথা বললে হয়ত খুব বেশি বলা হবে না যে, তিনি ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের রেনেসাঁর প্রথম বিকাশ ঘটাতে অগ্রণী ভূমিকা পালন করেন।

ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের ইতিহাসে The Age of Chaucer বা কবি জেফ্রি চসারের (Geoffrey Chaucer) যুগ খুবই তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ ও গুরুত্বের দাবিদার। কেননা তাঁর আগমনের পূর্বে ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের অবস্থা খুবই নাজুক ছিল। তিনিই সর্বপ্রথম এ সাহিত্যকে সন্তানস্নেহে লাল

ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের Middle English Period এর সুত্রপাত Norman Duke উইলিয়াম দ্য কনকরারের (William the Conqueror) নরমান বিজয়ের মাধ্যমে। তিনি ১০৬৬ সালে England দখল করেন। ফলে শুরু হয় ইংল্যান্ডে নরমানদের রাজত্ব। ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের ইতিহাসে মধ্যযুগ অর্থাৎ ১০৬৬ থেকে ১৫০০ সময়কালকে The Middle Ages বলা হয়। এ সময়কালের প্রথমার্ধকে The Dark Ages বা অন্ধকার যুগও বলা হয়ে থাকে।

ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের The Anglo Saxon Period (অ্যাংলো-স্যাক্সন যুগ) বা The Old English Period (প্রাচীন যুগ) ৪৫০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ থেকে শুরু হয়ে ১০৬৬ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত। ইংরেজী ভাষা অথবা সাহিত্য কোনটাই এ সময়ের মধ্যে পূর্ণাঙ্গ আকার লাভ করতে পারেনি। তবুও এ যুগটিই ইংরেজী সাহিত্যের ঊষাকাল হিসেবে পরিগণিত হয়। প্রাচীন এ যুগ সম্পর্কে আলোচনা করার পূর্বে এ যুগের main focus বা আলোচনার বিষয়বস্তু ঠিক করে নেয়া যাক—
